Searches related to Trump hit the second highest peak in 2016 around October 7, 2016.[13] On October 7, 2016 an audio recording between Trump and Billy Bush was leaked in which Trump bragged about groping women.[14] While Trump attempted to dismiss the tape by calling it “locker room talk,” celebrities, senators, and everyday citizens were furious and took action both in physical and digital spaces. By examining Twitter searches for Trump related posts on the dates surrounding October 7, 2016, it is evident that thousands of tweets appear in direct opposition to Trump.
These tweets were often followed by popularized hashtags such as #GrabEmByThePussy and #NeverTrump. One tweet referenced an earlier tweet made by Donald Trump, calling for Anthony Weiner to be removed from office due to him being a “sexual pervert.”[16] The opposing tweet used the hashtag #GrabEmByThePussy to show Trump’s hypocrisy to millions and sparked further outrage. In addition, Facebook was home to similar social media protests. With the ability to type more than 140 characters, Facebook users often posted links to articles that summarized their disgust with Trump’s comments, resulting in a rapid spread of information and mobilization after the incident.[17]
